A rare virus linked to rodents has sparked international concern after a deadly outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. Health officials confirmed that several passengers were infected with the Andes strain of hantavirus, a dangerous disease commonly spread through contact with infected rat or mouse droppings.
The outbreak reportedly began after travelers visited parts of Argentina where infected rodents are known to carry the virus. Since then, multiple countries including the United States, France, Spain, and the Netherlands have monitored passengers connected to the ship. At least three deaths and several confirmed infections have already been reported.
Experts say the overall public risk remains low, but the situation has gained worldwide attention because the Andes strain is one of the few hantaviruses capable of limited human-to-human transmission. Health authorities are now tracing contacts, quarantining exposed passengers, and warning travelers to avoid contact with rodent waste in poorly ventilated areas.
The World Health Organization continues to monitor the situation closely as countries coordinate emergency health measures to prevent further spread.
